Swarming is the natural means of reproduction for honeybee colonies. A new honeybee colony is formed when the Queen Bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees which is the process called "swarming". In the prime swarm, about 60% of the worker bees leave the original hive location with the old queen. This swarm can contain thousands to ten of thousands of bees. Swarming is mainly a spring phenomenon, usually within a two or three week period depending on the locale but occasional swarms can happen throughout the producing season.

It is sort of funny how we all have this strange fear of bees. There is something to be said about being stung or the fear of. Well, we know this all too well and our passion and love for bees has helped a lot of people out with removals, education, and most importantly, saving the bees.

What can we do to help save the Honey Bees

Everyone has a tiny deep down fear of being stung but that should be the least of your worries.  Have you ever thought of what might happen if there were no bees?

These little guys play a vital role in our everyday life.  Through Pollination, bees help produce many of our specialty crops like almonds, berries, fruits and vegetables.  According to a recent CNN article, it's estimated that bees are responsible for about one in every three bites of food in the U.S.  That's a crop value of $15 billion to 18 billion.

But as great as this sounds, things are not looking to great these days for the bees.

Honeybee Colonies since the 1940's have decreased from 5 million to 2.5 million.  Researchers say there could be a variety of reasons to there decline saying anything from parasite, not enough pollen, bacteria, all the way to environmental reasons.

If  you are just as concerned about the bees like we are at The Honey Ladies, and even if you are not a beekeeper, no worries.  Here are five simple things you can do to do your part in helping saving the bees:

1. The Pollinator Partnership:  World's largest nonprofit organization dedicated solely to help protect and promote pollinators like bees.
2. Plant: Whether it is a window box in your apartment, a garden in your backyard or a green space in your community, there's something you can grow to help bees no matter where you live.  A good example is choose plants that flower at different time of the year to provide nectar and pollen sources throughout the growing season.
3. Reduce or limit: Limit the use of pesticides while plants are in bloom and while the bees are out foraging.  Bees can be poisoned by these pesticides which can drift onto blooming plants or weeds.
4. Register: If you already have a green thumb and plants available for pollination, you can register your space to be included on the Pollinator Partnership's database.  This S.H.A.R.E. map collects pollinator habitats from all over the world in an effort to build the community.
5. Buy local: Some of you already know how wonderful our local honey is.  This is a great way to do your part.  So be on the look out for local organically grown fruits and vegetable and especially our honey.

Bee Hive Rentals San Jose

Good Afternoon from the Honey Ladies.

Have you ever thought of renting to own your very own beehive?  Well get ready, we do just that.  We rent beehives to Gardner's and local home owners with small acreage farms.  We will also work with you on a rent-to-own basis.

Now you might be thinking is this a task I am ready to take on.  Taking on the role of a beekeeper is not as easy as 1 2 3.  Honeybee colonies are not like kittens or puppies that can be easily moved and/or on a very short notice.  A healthy hive in mid-summer will have approximately 30,000 happy residents.  So even with a rental, a beehive is a commitment not only to your garden and the environment, but also to the hive itself.

So with that being said, research is key when taking on this commitment.  Here are a few things you should do:

• Study..Study..Study
• Read up on Beehives.  Buy several books.  Knowledge is power.
• Join your local Bee club.  This is a great way to meet with several fellow Beekeepers to get tips and feedback on what works and doesn't.
• Take a beginners beekeeping course.  I highly recommend this as it will better familiarize yourself with the wonderful role as beekeeper.

Hive rentals are seasonal and usually done for a specific crop or the pollination of a garden.  Honeybees have outstanding pollination abilities and are ideal for backyard gardens and small acreage farmers.  Honeybees are normally available for rental from the end of April until August.

Our professionally trained beekeepers prepare the hive(s) on your property and the installation is designed to make the honeybees job of taking care of and improving your property easy, but also to protect the hive from family pets, children's play areas, excess sun, moisture and any other detrimental elements so it may flourish naturally.  

After installation, we offer maintenance and regular check-ups of the hive which is included in the price.

Welcome to our Blog!

About me:  I am a second generation bee keeper bringing in some old fashioned techniques but also a forward thinker when it comes to "clean" beekeeping.

Some of the services we have to offer include removals of wasps, bee's, hives and swarms.  We also offer the sale of bee's, hive rentals, and hive check up's.  Most importantly though, we offer some of the best local honey around.  Our honey is "ALWAYS" 100% raw with just the basic filtration.  What this means is we would never "extend" the honey with corn syrup or otherwise.

Here are some facts about Honey:

1.  Honey never goes bad.

2.  One bee in her lifetime does not make one spoonful of honey.   It takes about 36 bee's during their nectar collecting phase to make a tablespoon of honey.

3.  If you don't like your honey to crystallize then keep it warm.  If it does crystallize, put it in a paper bag on top of your car on a warm day and it will go back to it's liquid form.

4.  Bee's don't refrigerate their honey.  In fact, they keep it at a toasty average of 98 degrees in the summer!
